Solutions Journalism
Solutions journalism is an approach to creating journalistic materials that offer problem-solving options and provide reasoning for why and how these solutions might or might not work. It doesn’t oppose other forms of journalism or require a complete overhaul of editorial work. Media outlets can integrate this format into their daily news coverage, and it can function as a distinct section on a website.
In times of global crises, solutions journalism can empower communities and counteract feelings of helplessness. While significant changes require government actions, there are individuals capable of addressing specific issues at the local level. Therefore, solutions journalism can contribute to changing the discourse, aiding in the search for ideas, and providing alternative perspectives.
Based on our own projects, we have created a landing page about solutions journalism. On this platform, you will find explanations of why this approach to content creation is relevant now, its features, how to create publications based on solutions, feedback from media professionals, examples of materials, and case studies from Lviv Media Forum.

Media Emergency Fund
In March 2020, we launched the Media Emergency Fund, a program aimed at providing financial support to media outlets that had lost a significant portion of their revenue due to the economic downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
The financial crisis posed a threat to the operation of dozens of independent newsrooms, which often serve as the sole reliable source of information for local communities. To assist them, the Lviv Media Forum team mobilized efforts and resources, directing them towards supporting the production of constructive content.
Thanks to the Media Emergency Fund, newsrooms received funds to prepare series of 4-8 materials in the style of solutions journalism. This allowed them to cover the work of journalists involved in creating these materials.

Local Media Innovations
The Lviv Media Forum project aiming to introduce the practice of solutions journalism into Ukrainian online publications. Following a competitive selection process, three local editorial teams received mentorship and underwent mandatory training on creating high-quality content in the solutions journalism style. Additionally, they received financial support for the production and promotion of their materials.
The NGO “Lviv Media Forum” worked on the Local Media Innovations and Media Emergency Fund programs with the financial support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic as part of the Transition Promotion Program.
